Ujjayi Kumvhaka (Conquering Breath)

This breathing exercise can help to soothe the nerves and relieve mental stress and insomnia. If you have high blood pressure, practice lying down; those with low blood pressure should not use the conquering breath technique.1

How to do it:1

  • Sit on the floor or other flat surface with legs crossed, feet resting on legs, or lie flat on your back with hands palm down beside the hips.
  • Slightly contract the back of the throat and inhale slowly and deeply through the nose, making a light snoring sound from the throat.
  • Concentrate on this sound and then exhale through the nose.
  • Repeat for one to five minutes.
