Ayurveda and Nail Health

According to Ayurvedic principles, your nails can help reveal your constitutional dosha as well as provide insight into what illnesses or nutritional deficiencies you may be suffering from. Ayurveda can also help you achieve beautiful, youthful looking hands and nails that shine. 1

The doshas are associated with the following different nail characteristics: 1

  • Vata: Generally thin, and brittle nails. Vata predominant types also tend to bite their nails from nervousness. They may also be prone to malabsorption of nail nutrients, which in indicated by vertical lines in the nail.
  • Pitta: Typically pink and medium-sized fingernails.
  • Kapha: Wide, strong, and white nails.
In Ayurveda, everyone is composed of some combination of three basic physical/psychological
types, usually with a predominate type.
