The Ayurvedic Approach to Weight Loss

Many of us may be unaware that ancient India was a highly affluent society. Then, as now, affluent societies often struggle with weight gain and obesity. Ayurveda, the ancient medical system of the time, was well-versed in helping people lose weight and may have much to teach us.86

Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to weight loss. An Ayurvedic approach will thus require more than just cutting calories, hitting the gym, and taking herbal supplements. Ayurveda attempts to reach the root-causes of the weight gain and support the individual into coming into a state of balance with techniques that are optimal for his or her personal body and mind. This may include looking into the person’s personality, daily habits, and environment, since some of the causes of weight issues may be linked to lifestyle. In a stressful, rushed society, it is easy to turn to food for the false sensation of comfort and ease. However, this temporary comfort actually creates a longer-term imbalance in the digestive system, leading to toxins in the system and overall weight-gain.87

The Causes of Weight Gain

According to Ayurveda, weight gain is caused by multiple factors. Some individuals are born with a kapha type constitution. Other causes of weight gain may be due to hormonal imbalance, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, emotional eating, improper eating habits from childhood, as well as poor nutritional patterns.87
